Suspecting SM > Screening before referral

Upon clinical suspicion of SM, a complete workup is recommended, often beginning with serum tryptase1,2

Serum tryptase testing is recommended as an initial step in evaluating the diagnosis of SM1,2

Tryptase is a serine protease stored and released by mast cells. Elevated tryptase levels serve as a highly specific marker of mast cell activation.3

Serum tryptase >20 ng/mL is one of the WHO minor criteria for SM4

Consider referring patients for a bone marrow examination if you record:1

  • Typical skin lesions
  • Spontaneous anaphylaxis
  • Persistently elevated tryptase levels
  • REMA score (high risk = ≥2 points)
